The hotel we were staying in was designed by the Inspiration team. Inspiration has been inspiring the upper-class society to live a sustainable lifestyle by choosing environment-friendly materials and technology for the houses they live in. Not just residences, but the team has designed a number of high-end resorts and hotels inspired by Laurie Baker’s approach to sustainable building construction. Architect Jaigopal Rao talked about how middle class population can be heavily inspired by the upper class population in terms of consumption and lifestyle changes. Common materials that the team uses are wood and reconstituted bamboos. Bamboos act as the reinforcement in place of steels and can build up to 15 stories of a structure. After the talk by Jaigopal, we went to visit some projects by Inspiration in Fort Kochi.
For the Fort tour, we were accompanied by Gully Tours, which is a company run by passionate youngsters. We could actually see how the tourism industry was attracting young population; Ajit, who was a fresh engineer was now wanting see a future in travel and tours company rather than his field of study. Later in the evening, we were able to witness the magic of Kathakali. Kathakali is a traditional form of story-telling dance, originated from Southern India. It takes a minimum of few decades for anybody to master this form of art. This performance started with a live make-up screening, followed by a beautiful love story between a king and a queen, with a swan as their messenger. They had elaborative expressions through their faces, and specifically with their eyes. Even watching them was making my eyes teary, I can’t imagine how much of practice they had to do to be so fluent in this art. It was a lovely performance!
